Why prices in Kolkata can differ

Bhavflow publishes one national indicative rate. A Kolkata jeweller’s board rate can be slightly higher or lower because of local association or bullion-dealer rates, transport and insurance costs, and the shop’s own margin; making charges and 3% GST come on top.

Bengali bridal jewellery is often lightweight and intricately made, which usually means a higher making charge per gram than plain machine-made pieces. Compare the making charge as well as the gold rate.

Poila Baishakh (the Bengali New Year), Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras are traditionally busy days for Kolkata jewellers.

Where to buy gold in Kolkata

Kolkata has one of India’s oldest goldsmith traditions. Bengali karigars are known for fine handcrafted and filigree work, and many of them work in jewellery workshops in other cities too, from Mumbai to Thrissur.

Bowbazar (B. B. Ganguly Street)
Kolkata’s traditional jewellery hub, lined with long-established family jewellers and workshops.
Gariahat
A busy South Kolkata shopping area with many jewellers and branches of national and Bengal-based chains.

Buying gold in Kolkata: a local guide

Local bullion market

Kolkata’s traditional jewellery district is Bowbazar, around B. B. Ganguly Street, lined with long-established family firms and workshops, and Gariahat in South Kolkata is another busy jewellery area. Bengali karigars are known across India for fine handcrafted and filigree work, and many of them work in jewellery workshops in other cities too.

Hallmarking and purity testing

BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking Centres operate in Kolkata, including in the Bowbazar area. Look for the BIS logo, the purity mark and a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID on every gold piece, and verify the HUID in the BIS CARE app. For old or unhallmarked jewellery, any recognised centre can test the purity for a fee and give you a report, which helps when you sell or exchange it.

Festivals and wedding season

Poila Baishakh (the Bengali New Year), Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras are traditional buying days, and Durga Puja and the winter wedding season keep jewellers busy. Bridal sets are often ordered months ahead.

Buying tips

Handcrafted Bengali designs usually carry higher making charges than machine-made pieces, so ask for the charge per gram or as a percentage and compare shops. Add 3% GST to the total, get a detailed invoice with weight, purity and HUID, and check the buyback terms, because making charges are not returned when you sell.

Before you buy: hallmark, HUID and making charges

  • Check the BIS hallmark on every piece: the BIS logo, the purity grade (for example 22K916 or 18K750) and a 6-digit HUID. Since 1 April 2023, registered jewellers may only sell hallmarked gold jewellery that carries a HUID (small items under 2 g and kundan, polki and jadau pieces are exempt).
  • Verify the HUID in the BIS CARE app (Verify HUID): it shows the purity, the type of article and the jeweller’s registration, which should match your bill.
  • Making charges vary widely. As general guidance, machine-made chains and plain bangles are often in the range of about 3–10% of the gold value, while handcrafted, temple, antique or filigree work commonly runs 12–25% or more; some jewellers charge a flat amount per gram instead. Ask for the charge in writing and compare shops.
  • 3% GST is charged on the jewellery bill. Ask for a GST invoice that lists net weight, purity, rate per gram, making charges, HUID and tax separately.
  • Ask about buyback and exchange terms before you buy: most jewellers pay the day’s rate for the tested purity minus a deduction.

Gold rate in Kolkata: FAQ

Why are making charges higher for Bengali-style jewellery?

Fine handcrafted and filigree work takes far more labour per gram than machine-made chains or bangles, and making charges reflect that. Ask for the charge as a percentage or per gram and compare across shops.

Is the gold rate in Kolkata different from Delhi or Mumbai?

Only slightly. GST is the same everywhere; local bullion premiums, transport and jeweller margins create small differences of a few rupees per gram.

Kolkata mein sone ka bhav aaj kya hai? (gold rate today in Kolkata)

Sone ka bhav aaj, today’s gold rate, is at the top of this page: Bhavflow’s national indicative rate for 22K, 24K and 18K gold per 10 grams and per gram, and chandi ka bhav aaj ka (today’s silver rate) per kg, all excluding GST and making charges. The IBJA benchmark (AM and PM) is shown next to it for comparison.

Does Bhavflow show a Kolkata-specific gold rate?

No. Bhavflow publishes one national indicative rate, calculated from international prices, and shows it on every city page. Jewellers in Kolkata may quote slightly different rates because of local association or bullion-dealer rates, transport and insurance costs and their own margins, and they add making charges and 3% GST.
